Weather in
Seychelles generally.
Seychelles is not
affected by cyclones. Cyclones occur above and below the latitudes 10ºN
and 10ºS of the Equator.
The Seychelles
Archipelago lies between 3º and 10ºS of the Equator. The islands open to
tourists are situated between 3-4ºS, with the exception of
Alphonse which is at 7ºS. Islands such as Aldabra, Farquhar, Cosmoledo
are sometimes subject to very strong, almost cyclonic winds.
In Seychelles
the weather is dominated by two prevailing
winds:
North-West Trade Winds and South-East Trade Winds
November to March:

Prevailing wind: North-West
Average wind speeds of 20-30km per hour.
Temperatures: 29°C to 32°C.
Sea: temperature - 28°C
to 29°C.
Rainfall: The majority falls during this period.
May
to September:
Prevailing wind:
South-East
Average wind speeds of 20-35km per hour.
Temperatures: 29°C to 32°C.
Sea: temperature - 26°C to 27°C.
Rainfall: Traditionally a fairly dry period.
October and April:
These months are
traditionally very calm and hot. The winds are changing as as a result
electrical storms may occur. Also wet windy squalls with the wind
direction changing between SW to W to WNW as the incoming winds 'battle' to
establish.
Bird Island
Weather
The weather on Bird
Island is much drier and sunnier than that of the granitic islands. This
is because Bird is sufficiently far north of Mahé (100km) to not be
affected by weather patterns which are created as a result of the winds
having to rise to pass over the mountains of Mahé causing long periods
of rainfall.
The below weather
charts show rainfall and temperature patterns for Bird Island also a
rainfall comparison graph between Mahé and Bird Island.
