Nowadays, Bird Island is home once again to 'birds
innumerable'
The variety is endless but can be divided
into three main groups:
Seabirds:
residents and migrants.
Shorebirds: migrants/vagrants.
Landbirds:
residents, migrants and vagrants.
Throughout the year there are at least 20 species of
birds that can be seen at any one time. A number of them nest on the
island year round and show little fear of our human visitors.
These include:
Seabirds: Fairy
terns, Common and Lesser Noddies, Frigatebirds.
Shorebirds:
Turnstones, Grey Plovers, Whimbrels.
Landbirds:
Seychelles Turtle Doves, Barred Ground Doves, Madagascar Fodies
Birds which breed regularly
on Bird Island: Sooty Terns, Common and Lesser Noddies, Fairy
Terns, White-tailed Tropicbirds, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters,
Madagascar/Seychelles Turtle Doves, Barred Ground Doves, Common Mynahs
and Madagascar Fodies.
