Sooty Terns
The Sooties have certainly increased and in
the last few days some, presumably those that have been around since the
end of February, have started to lay. The operation to crop the colony
is in place and ready to begin as soon as the birds in the collection
zone start to lay. We are expecting in the next week to be joined by a
member of the Department of Environment for the duration of the cropping
season so that they can monitor the cropping process.
Weather
This month we experienced the most
incredibly high waves for two days. They were apparently caused by a
combination of events including strong air currents and a
mini-tsunami event down south in Reunion. It was quite a spectacle
and although initially we feared that it would result in a lot of
beach erosion we found although it did take away quite a lot of sand
from in front of the lodge it did not encroach into the vegetation
in any way. The beach was already quite long and so it simply
flattened it a bit but left it as wide as it was. The hope now is
that we do not get hit by a strong ocean swell coupled with a high
tide as this could indeed result in a greater loss of land.
Staff Update
Can
you believe it...little Frankline (of Franky and Marvel) and
Emmeline (of Steven and Maria), who were both born a little
premature, have just celebrated their 1st Birthdays. Marvel went all
out to make sure that it was a memorable birthday party, with two
pink cakes for the little girls and plenty of snacks that her mother
had made for the occasion. Dylan and Lisa (Patlyne and Michel's
little girl) attended and gobbled up all of food they could manage
before chasing after balloons and generally causing havoc! It was a
lovely celebration and it is so good to see that both of the little
girls are doing so well.
