Sooty Terns

Chris Feare could only manage a week on the island this year for his annual ring search but with the help of volunteer Eva Schumacher and of course Roby, they managed to pass the 100 mark before the week was out. Initial analysis has picked up that they caught one bird originally ringed on Cosmoledo and another from Aride. Chris will be analysing all of the data at the end of the season and will produce a report on the sustainability of the colony on Bird. Roby will be continuing the ring search in the meantime with the help of Magella, from the Department of Environment , who is on the island for another few weeks as part of the egg cropping programme.

Tortoises

A couple of weeks ago we had a special cargo arrive by boat. Three giant tortoises were gifted to us from friends on Mahé who felt that they could no longer care for them there. They all traveled well and are currently residing on the other side of the island at Hirondelle where they were brought ashore. We expect that once they have settled they will most likely make their way up through the island to join the rest of the main group around the hotel grounds. We will be naming the tortoises in the coming days once they have been correctly sexed by Roby.

Staff Update

We have some wonderful news for those of you who remember Juliette who left the island in the middle of last year. She has just given birth to a baby boy called Jadon . Her partner Joel, who still works with us on the island is over the moon with the new addition and hopes to bring Juliette and the baby up to the island in the next few weeks to meet us all. We can't wait! As soon as we can post a photo of Jadon we will!

Bird Island Video

Earlier this month we had a local film maker staying on the island with us for one week to make a short video about the hotel and the island. We roped in the guests for filming and great fun was had by all! We are looking forward to seeing the finished product and will be selling copies in the boutique as soon as they are ready.
