Sooty Terns
We are really glad to see that the chicks
are fairing very well this year. Now we are starting to see the young
chicks opening their wings and lifting on the south easterly breezes. It
wont be long before some start to fledge. The food is still out there
which is a good sign for the growing chicks. We have had some very
successful fishing trips in recent days with clients catching Yellow fin
Tuna and Sailfish suggesting that the waters are full of the smaller
bait which the Sooties rely on.
Weather
After a very dry July we finally
received some rain this month. Although the South East season is
traditionally the dry season, we have come to realise in the short
time that we have been on Bird, that you certainly can not rely on
the weather anymore. As with everywhere in the world today the
climate is changing and predictable seasons in regards to sunshine
hours and rainfall no longer apply. It is certainly an issue that
has received a lot of international attention this last eighteen
months and even here in the Seychelles the government is making an
effort to involve themselves in dialogue with other nations which is
a positive sign for this small oceanic island state.
Turtle Season
This
month was a very good month for Green Turtles on Bird. We recorded a
total of 6 Green emergences all of which managed to lay successfully.
Roby managed to spot three of the turtles on his rounds which is pretty
good considering that they only tend to come up after dark. It is a good
buildup for the start of the Hawksbill season which should start next
month. Roby is going to be rushed off his feet and super fit by the end
of the year I am sure!
